Leadership Achievements in Benefit to the City and People of Dowagiac
Housing & Infrastructure
Mayor Lyons helped secure over $4.5 million in state and federal grants since 2020 to support home renovations and repairs for Dowagiac residents.
Economy & Jobs
As a major local employer, Don has created hundreds of skilled jobs at Lyons Industries and partnered with SMC to promote apprenticeships that boost wages, build skills, and meet local labor needs.
Blight
As Mayor, Don led reforms to strengthen blight enforcement. Starting this year, Dowagiac police can issue tickets for property neglect, illegal dumping, and hazardous structures—giving the city more power to hold property owners accountable.
Healthcare
Mayor Lyons has partnered with local health providers to expand access to quality care. Beacon Health now operates Borgess Lee Hospital, enhancing emergency and inpatient services, while Corewell Health’s new clinic has added 1,200 patients and plans to grow with two new doctors.
City Services
Mayor Lyons worked to ensure the city's water treatment and distribution system was lead free. He also helped secure a $1 million grant for residents to replace lead pipes within their homes to work toward the goal of having the cleanest water supply in Michigan.
Transportation
Dowagiac has an on-demand subsidized transportation system (DART) that it operates in conjunction with the Cass County Transportation Authority (CCTA) to provide county-wide transportation.
Mayor Lyons’ Commitment to Community Investment
Mayor Lyons has worked hard to ensure our Dowagiac community continues to move forward by investing in the people that live and work here. Our city budget can only go so far. That’s one reason why Don has been so willing to give back to the city that has given so much to him and his family. Since becoming Mayor, Don, his wife Joan, and Lyons Industries have provided funding for a multitude of community improvements.
